Thornton has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cfa) with hot, dry summers and mild to cool winters. The average monthly temperature ranges from 22 °F in January to 94 °F in July. The average annual precipitation varies from around 1,500 mm (59 inches) in summer to less than 300 mm (13 inches) during winter. The first people who lived here were Paiute Indians who came from the east in 1847. They built cabins on the bluffs overlooking Clear Creek and made trade with the local farmers and ranchers. In 1868, settlers coming from Denver arrived here and began farming land they had bought from the Indians. By 1870, Thornton had a post office and two churches- oneMethodist and one Presbyterian- as well as a schoolhouse, store, blacksmith shop, cattle barns, three sawmills and five farms averaging about 160 acres (72 hectares). In 1875, James Lanyon founded the First National Bank of Thornton with $10 worth of gold that he had mined near Telluride during the Rocky Mountains Gold Rush. He named his bank after his father-in-law General George Armstrong Custer who had been killed at Little Bighorn during what became known as "The Great Sioux War." Lanyon also donated land for an Agricultural Experiment Station which grew into National University of Agriculture & Technology today known as USDA Agricultural College & Research Center (). In 1905 President Theodore Roosevelt designated Thornton as seat of government for Weld County when it was created out of parts of San Miguel County and Asotin County.. In 1916 Congress passed United States Code Section 3362 which provided for special status for Thornton within National Capital Region; this section lasted until 1935 when it was repealed by Section 3364(a)(1) of Public Law 93–596 ().
