In 1859, prospectors from Denver discovered gold near what is now Thornton and beganmining for it. The discovery led to a rapid growth of Thornton as miners arrived to seek their fortune. By 1870, Thornton had become one of the most important mining towns in America due to its rich gold resources. In 1875, President Ulysses S. Grant offered $10 million for any discoveries of gold in Nevada but no one claimed it because there was no evidence of gold existent in that state at that time. A group of investors led by Jepson Brothers decided to invest in Nevada's Gold Rush and founded the City of Reno on Valentine hills east of present-day Thornton. This new town became an important stop onthe Underground Railroad as abolitionists attempted to flee slavery during the American Civil War by traveling through Nevada into Mexico and then across into central Utah Territory where they could freedom without fear of capture or retribution by Ulysses S Grant's army
