In 1951, when freeways were being built through much of Colorado, US Route 66 was chosen as one of their many alternate routes; consequently, the depot closed its doors for good in 1966 and been converted into a museum dedicated to this roadway's history and culture. Today there are few permanent residents living within miles of downtown Thornton – instead most people live near US 66 or Schools District No 1 where they commute into city services or work on factory farms close by during wintertime about 25 miles away outside town limits
