Thornton is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 4,451 at the 2000 census. It is part of theDenver–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. Thornton is located on the banks of the Animas River and has a full-time school system that serves kindergarten through 12th grade. The community began as a farming settlement in 1875 and was named for one of its founders, James Thornton. A post office was established in Thornton in 1879 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1966.
