In 1902, Thornton City was formed from parts of Thornton and Aurora. In 1907, the city annexed part of Lyons County. This annexation added 1,500 acres (590 hectares) of land to the city limits. Prior to this time most inhabitants came primarily through migration from other parts of Colorado or Midwest Cities such as Aurora or Westminster because those areas had larger populations at that time due to railroad construction or mining boomtowns situated along major rivers likeColorado's Gunnison Valley or Wyoming's Rocky Mountains (eager prospectors discovered rich deposits of gold near Aspen and Grand Junction). For example: Noteworthy families who came prior to 1920 include: Swenzer family (1882), Franks family (1910), Jaffe family (1920), etc... Most growth took place during World War I when many farmers flooded into Colorado following America's entry into conflict against Germany & Austria over control of Belgium & Czechoslovakia respectively; resulting increased need for land & resources across Weld County although industry continued modestly developing without much impact on population density until around 1940 when concentrations peaked due largely to WWI military veterans returning home looking for opportunity(in particular men working construction) rather than farming/ ranching jobs typical back then outside cities especially since there were no job opportunities available on returns home Afterward many Mexicans streamed into Weld County but not all married locals did so resultant high percentage of mixed marriages among both Mexican+American residents living here Today some 30%+of total populace are either independently wealthy relatives owning businesses/land within city limits OR directly descended from early Euro American settlers including Scots Presbyterians relocated here long ago 5 years ago Today’s average household wealth exceeds $160K making our community oneOf Wealthiest Places In Colorado!

Thornton, Colorado is a small town located in Weld County, Colorado. The population was 2,907 at the 2010 census. Thornton was founded in 1892 by J.D. Thornton and his family. It is named after John Denton Thornton, a pioneer settler who arrived in 1849. The first store in Thornton opened its doors in 1896. In 1907, the United States Post Office moved from Greeley to Thornton and the town became an incorporated city on December 4 of that year. Today, Thornton is a bedroom community for Greeley and Carbon City; it has no retail sector other than grocery stores and one restaurant which serves light snacks only during business hours. The history of Thornton began with the construction of the Central Pacific Railroad through Weld County in 1892-1893. The railroad's route passed through present day Thornton on what is now known as the "Thornton Cut" or "Thornhill Cut". This cut intersected the main line at what is now called Old US Highway 9W near present day Interstate 25 (I-25). With this new connection came new opportunities for agriculture and ranching in what would become Thornton Township; today's central business district includes most of these businesses dating back to those early years. The first school built within current boundaries of Thornton was constructed on Wirtz Avenue in 1902-1903 by Mrs. Arent Beardsley (later Mrs. James Hickey). That same year saw the opening of First National Bank & Trust Company which still stands today as one of downtown's major employers - responsible for over 150 jobs across three floors inside its building alone! Between 1908-1910, two churches were built: First Baptist Church (now Our Lady of Mount Carmel) on North Main Street and Second Presbyterian Church (now United Methodist) on South Main Street both serving local residents until they were sold off to other denominations sometime between 1925-1927 when their property reverted back to state ownership following prohibition laws being tightened up throughout America during that time period! By 1928 there existed only six remaining churches within Weld County - all but two having been abandoned due to declining congregational membership or lack thereof! In 1912 Don Armstrong opened his first gas station/convenience store at 5303 Shaffer Boulevard later becoming known as Armstrong Bros Hardware Store before closing it down permanently due to Prohibition era regulations prohibiting sales alcohol! One such store closure which directly impacted Thornton was that of Armour Drug Company located on Third Street just east side Pikes Peak Ave., closed down after less than a year because managers found themselves unable to compete with larger counterparts like Albertsons Stores Incorporated! It wasn't until 1933 when things changed somewhat for our town when Jens Schroeder established himself as locally owned general contracting company working primarily within education projects throughout Weld County prior moving operations into his current facility adjacent to Union High School - now home to Brighton Elementary School - beginning providing services originally provided by Denver contractors hired by Goshen Unified School District starting appearing very shortly thereafter primarily around 1935/1936 renovation work also taking place upon request from nearby schools including Memorial High School starting open’ting concurrent with original Schmidt’s services!! Local merchants began using him more frequently rather thenDenver contractors simply because he offered better value & quality service!! Unfortunately little else changed beyond this point due largely toinelli rigid government regulation surrounding liquor industry preceding World War II!!!
