The town's history can be traced back to 1868 when John Thornton founded Thornton Ranch on what is now Pueblo Street near I-25. He became well known for his horse breeding operation which he operated for many years before selling land to settlers in the early 1900s. By 1910, Thornton had built a large ranch house on his property that served as both his home and office until he sold it in 1914 to Averill Clements who developed it into an agricultural center that included a flour mill, cheese factory, livestock pens, sawmill, general store (later called First National Bank), blacksmith shop (later renamed First American Bank), post office (later renamed Western Union), schoolhouse (now named Hendrickson School), and other outbuildings. In 1924–1925 Chas Sibley bought land adjacent to Thornton from Clements which became Sibley Farms which eventually produced hay and cattle while also hosting stock shows and other events at nearby Golden Valley Fairgrounds between 1925-1960 Thornton began rapid growth following its incorporation as a municipality on November 3rd of 1975 under name "Thornton" The original water tower still stands today within minutes walk of current day business district boundaries According to 2009 Census data there are currently 514 residents living within city limits with single family homes accounting for 92% of all residences while 2% live in multi-family dwellings As per capita income rises over time this percentage drops slightly but remains above poverty line Industrial zoning regulations have led some homeowners associations to pressure City Council not recognize them as such giving rise to some Council members frustration

Thornton is one of the most recent communities established in Arapaho County and it was founded on July 14, 1907 by George Thornton. The first post office in Thornton wasestablished on October 3, 1907. The first store in Thornton was operated by Fenton & Locke and it had a total of six employees. The first school in Thornton was also opened for instruction on December 1, 1907. It was run by Mrs. Lillie Burch and her students were taught reading, writing and arithmetic by Miss Olive Greeley from Weld County. The first oil well drilled near Thornton was discovered on February 25, 1911 and production began the following day at a rate of 600 barrels per day! By 1912 the production had increased to over 2,000 barrels per day! In 1916 an additional oil well developed near Thornton but due to gas gashes caused by seismic activity ceased operations after only two months! In 1924 an artificial lake was created along with a dam to provide irrigation water for agriculture while also providing power for industry; this project also included the construction of a flour mill which greatly boosted local economy during that time period! On May 11th 1924 local citizens brought about the creation of their own fire department when they organized "The Citizens' Volunteer Fire Department" effective that date! On October 15th 1927 new schools were built within easy walking distance of each other; these buildings served as homeschooling classrooms until 1976 when district administration moved into new facilities adjacent to I-25 southwest of town! Today many people misconception’ed as being “the original” Thornton still visit annually for picnics inside what once constituted their high school gymnasium/cafeteria complex dating back to 1926... more than seventy years ago!) In 1951 John Haggerty started operating his second grocery store which became known as "J H's". J H's successfully competed against Grocery Outlet Company (GOC) during that time period before finally closing its doors in 1984 due to economic conditions%. GOC reopenedits doors one year later but closed them again due to lack of demand in 1986!!! In November 2000 Eileen Kapp donated her land next doorto JH's former location formerly used as parking lothecleaned up and reopened as "Kapp's Market". With all these closures over the years there has been somethingofa spirit or community spirit aroundThornton not found anywhere elsein ArapahoCounty!! It wasn't until 2002 when Tom Armstrong opened his business - Armstrong's Pizza - across from Kapp's Market giving Thornton its present day commercial district!!! This revitalization has helped keep much needed lifeblood hustlinginto townand generatingcommerce thereby sustaining our economy!!!!
