Thornton, Colorado is a small town located in Weld County, Colorado. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. Thornton is the home of the Thornton Air Force Base and the headquarters for Rocky Mountain National Park. It is also home to a number of businesses and services that support local residents. The community began as a small farming village in 1885. A post office was established in Thornton in 1886, and by 1888 there were six homes in the village. In 1912, the name of the village was changed to Thornton after General David Ewing Thornton who had fought during World War I. The air force base opened in 1949 and has since played an important role in their economy. The town became an incorporated town on July 1, 1959. Today, Thornton's economy relies largely on its partnership with Rocky Mountain National Park which includes Operation Golden Spike which helps manage resources for park visitors and employs over 130 people full-time; education; health care; manufacturing; tourism; retail stores; restaurant/café businesses; transportation services including shuttle service from Denver International Airport to Trail Blazer Regional Airport and Amtrak service to Larimer Junction Railroad Station .

The population increased to 2,500 by 1912 but decreased to 1,847 by 2000. A new shopping mall opened in 2006 in the heart of the town and has been serving residents since then.
