Thornton, Colorado is a small town located in Mesa County, Colorado. Thornton was founded in 1868 by J.D. Thornton and his wife Emma. The community was named after General John A. Pershing, who died in 1881 while on campaign in Mexico City. The town had a population of just over 100 when it became the site of the first U.S. military engagement of World War I, which led to its current size of around 5,000 residents. The history of Thornton begins with the arrival of pioneers in 1868. J D Thornton and his wife Emma came westward from Illinois looking for land to settle and found a rancho called "Hacienda New Mexico" about eleven miles east of present-day Thornton on what is now US 50A/Pine Creek Road. They built a cabin there and started farming their new land until they were forced out by Native Americans in 1876 due to an Indian war that had broken out between the Pueblo People and the Mexicans near their rancho area. In 1870, another pioneer family arrived at Hacienda New Mexico from Arkansas: Samuel Burt and his family settled on part of what is now owned by rancher Donnie Neuman down at Coyote Creek Ranch northwest of present day Thornton (Neuman donated most of that acreage). By 1880, the town had grown to include three stores, two hotels and fifteen homes; it was known as "the little city". In 1890 it had also become home to local schools – Western School District No 1 opened up shop here in October 1888 as one result of an agreement made between Governor John Evans and millionaire Denver philanthropist Cyrus McCormick Meadowlake (of Anheuser-Busch beer fame) The First World War brought much change to Thornton during 1918-19; Prior thereto the whole area lay unoccupied due to prohibition laws passed at this time across America which limited alcoholic access among certain segments thereof – citizens being those who could afford it or those with connections through organized crime figures like Meyer Lansky etcetera…. It wasn't until November 1918 when troops began arrive from Fort Carson nearby for maneuvers purposes that things got heated up! On December 6th…..the first significant skirmish took place when American soldiers attacked Mexican forces entrenched behind high walls surrounding Doña Ana River…. Unknown to either side however casualties were high as both sides fought hand-to-hand attrition ensued for almost two hours before finally withdrawing without further injury…..the event has been sometimes erroneously described as an international border skirmish; nevertheless United States Army historians have consistently insisted that no blood was spilled on Ute Reservation soil…….. The following year saw even more activity with troops coming into town daily for food rations…and munitions storage facilities were established along Pine Creek Rd.; these days you can still see some old munitions storage buildings scattered around town…Thereafter life returned back to normal until 1935 when prohibition enforcement shifted from State control over Federal lands under post WWI jurisdictional arrangement (see History Of Alcohol Prohibition In The United States) On July 4th 1951 James E Morrison moved into #849 N Main Street & began running Old Time Radio Service out Of His Garage…..This Was To Be One Of The Most Significant EVENTS IN THE CITY COUNCIL's HISTORY When He Started Playin' Country Music…………….On That Day Some 8 Years Ago Today Our Community Believed In Fun As Well As Good Times……….Today We Honor Him dearly In All That We Do…………..
Thornton was founded in 1892 by John Thornton and his brother-in-law, James McMillin. The town was named for the Thornton Range of mountains to the east. By 1912, Thornton had a population of about 240 people. The first post office opened in 1893. A school, grocery store, and three churches were built in the early years of Thornton's existence. In 1911, the Colorado Fuel & Iron Company established an oil refinery at Thornton; it continued to operate until 1979.
