Thornton, Colorado is a small town located in Weld County, Colorado. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. The Thornton International Airport is the largest employer in Thornton. The first settler in Thornton was John Pomeroy who arrived in 1864 from Illinois. In 1868, Edward J. Smith and his family settled here and moved to what is now North Park on the south side of town. The Smiths founded a flour mill that still stands today. Another early settler, Mrs. Henson, ran a boarding house and grocery store on Main Street in what is now the downtown core of Thornton. In 1886, Harry Ayer bought land east of present day Thornton and built a large farmstead known as Ayer's Tower which still stands to this day. From here he sold goods door-to-door throughout Weld County for many years until his death in 1907 at the age of 83 years old. George Fenton purchased Ayer's Tower from Harry Ayer and soon began to build an important business empire that included various mills, stores, restaurants and other businesses along Central Avenue in downtown Thornton today known as Third Street Business District - one of only a few remaining commercial districts in Adams County before suburbanization began nearly 30 years later . In 1923 Elisha Schieffer organized local farmers' markets into what is now called "Thornton Farmers' Market Syndicate." Today there are over 20 participating markets throughout Adams County operated by more than 175 farmers associations across 657 rural acres!

In 1912, Mayor James Lintz recommended that the town build a water tower to provide irrigation for their agricultural fields and they did so in 1913. By 1915-16, it had become apparent that water supplies were inadequate for all purposes in downtown Thornton and so a new building was erected on Main Street to serve as municipalhall (currently known as City Hall). With modernization and improvements such as sewers and streetlights throughout the late 19th century/early 20th century during this time period many things changed for Thornton including becoming an agricultural center with growing horticulture production; however much still remains unchanged about this historically significant community today
