Thornton is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,847 at the 2010 census. Thornton is located on the eastern slope of Mesa Verde National Park and is within the Garden of the Gods National Monument. The area that now Thornton was part of the old Tipi Hills Indian Reservation. The first white person to settle in what is now Thornton was John Purdy in 1879. He built a cabin on his ranch and began to sell products from his land, such as flour and cattle, to other settlers in nearby Castle Rock and Golden Valley. In 1887, Purdy married Anna Atherton and they started a family. In 1905, Anna died; John then married Helena Ladda. They also founded an grocery store in Thornton which continued until it closed its doors in 1964. In 1907, Roy Gorman bought some of Purdy's land east of Thornton for $10 per acre ($140 per lot). Gorman developed it into a farming community called Goshen which housed around 100 people during its heyday (1907-1972). Goshen had two schools - one public and one private - as well as several businesses including a post office, bank, livery stable/feedlot, law office and garage/shopkeeper's shop. Gorman sold his holdings to Harry Barger in 1972 for $3 million dollars ($27 million today). Barger named his development Goshen Lakes after his home state of Nebraska where he had spent time as an employee of the Omaha World-Herald newspaper company while working on their bookings department before leaving for Denver in 1949 when their paper merged with rival Rocky Mountain News Company (nowDenver Post Company). In 1984-1985 local historian Don Haggerty created a historical society mascot entitled "Doc" (Don Haggerty being Ryan Haggerty's father) which toured various venues throughout southern Colorado teaching local history topics such as golf courses & mining operations /the place where Lakota Chief Sitting Bull surrendered at Wounded Knee Creek: "It Wasn't About Chiefs"
