Thornton is a town in San Miguel County, Colorado, United States. The population was 924 at the 2010 census. Thornton is the smallest of the five towns in San Miguel County and has the lowest population density of any municipality in the county. Thornton is also home to one of two remaining sawmills in Colorado, which are used for lumber. The town was founded by European settlers in 1881 as a prospecting community on what is now called Thornton Mesa. It adopted its present name from George A. Thornton, an early settler who operated a ranch there before moving to Telluride in 1886. The remains of Thornton Mesa can be found off Ute Pass Road about east of town. The first post office was established in 1881, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. A store and hotel were built around 1886, and two churches were erected that same year: First Presbyterian Church (now Western Baptist) and Second Presbyterian Church (later Independence Baptist). In 1895, a railroad line was completed through town connecting it with Telluride via US Highway 506; thus, Thornton became known as "the Junction City." In 1902, settlement began near the Sawmill Hotel; however, no permanent buildings were constructed until 1909 when an addition to the original hotel gave it space for a schoolhouse and other related facilities. With oil discoveries made nearby during World War I (the largest ever hydraulic fracturing operation), production at the sawmill increased rapidly; by 1922 it employed over 200 people initially plus additional workers during peak seasons. However, despite this growth momentum, profits declined throughout most of 1923 due to changes brought about by global recession; finally nailing down stable prices for lumber allowed operations to resume more normal levels by 1926-27 even as production grew again only slowly due to timeshare issues among workers following World War II/ Korean War disruptions affecting both markets In 1955-56 when Interstate 70 crossed through town from south to north just west of Town Center Drive NE & CR-8A road junction then became Fort Collins Boulevard then US 160th Ave SW so much traffic diverted onto these streets caused Boardman's Lumber Co Ltd., owner ofThornton Sawmill closed their mill on 7/1/1956

Thornton, Colorado is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,547 at the 2010 census. Thornton is located on the eastern edge of the Poudre River Valley and has an elevation of 4,386 feet (1,400 m). It is part of the Denver–Aurora–Lakewood metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Thornton came from Illinois in 1855 as a result of the California Gold Rush. They named their new settlement after John Thornton who had lost his fortune during that year's rush. The first post office was established in 1857 and initial mail service arrived in 1861. In 1870s oil fields were discovered on the east side of town and much economic growth came from these activities until World War I when production stopped due to wartime restrictions on oil exports. After the war Thornton experienced a period of gentrification with many businesses moving into central city areas such as Aurora or Littleton where jobs were available. The high school closed in 1984 and most public services were discontinued in 1996 when Thornton became an unincorporated community within Weld County boundaries. In 2007, allegations surfaced that local business owners had been extortioneering opponents of development projects within Thornton by threatening to withhold business permits if they did not support those projects. A grand jury eventually indicted 24 people associated with four businesses: Horizon Public Relations Inc., American Rockwell Controls LLC, Summit Group Properties LP (a joint venture between two Republican donors) and Northstar Management LP for conspiracy to extort money from opponents of development projects in western Weld County through threats to prevent them from issuing permits or investing money into those projects
