Denver decided to incorporation his newtown into a larger municipality because he saw this as an opportunity to develop what he thought were valuable resources close to his homebase on Montezuma Creek Valley Rancho Viejo east of today's Thornton (near Aspen). By doing so, he believed he could control more traffic through the community while ensuring that quality products reached his customers in greater numbers than if he had relied upon wagon road transport alone. Today Superior's economy depends largely upon tourism which brings millions each year both within our borders (from visits by locals) as well as out-of-state visitors who come seeking skiing or hiking opportunities on our world-renowned golf courses like St Andrews or Carnoustie Open Air Theatre complex (the largest indoor theater complex in North America). In 1876, a group of farmers in the town of Superior decided to build a new post office. The settlers named their new post office Superior because it was the highest point in the town. The first Postmaster General of Colorado was John S. Hall and he chose this name because it was superior to any other post office in the state.
