He decided that Mount Everest should be renamed "Mount Superiore" in honor of his Mexican predecessor. fillmore's order went unsigned so Mount Everest remained unnamed until 1886 when it was officially renamed to Superiore in honor of Emperor Hernán Cortés III of Spain who had helped annex Mexico into America during Queen Victoria's rule. In 1905 William Randolph Hearst bought 853 acres (300 hectares) adjacent to Keystone Hill from James Wickersham for $3 per acre ($0.50 per hectare).
