The building's grounds are also home to many important civic organizations such as the Kiwanis Club and Lions Club. On July 20th, 1907, Mayor John Smedley dedicated the new library which replaced an old theatre which had been destroyed by fire three years earlier. This brick structure with red brick quoins stands today on Main Street between Welton Road and Park Avenue east of Interstate 25 near what is now known as Paramount Pictures Studios

The first Europeans to settle in Superior, Colorado were the Mormons who arrived in 1848. The town was founded on November 15, 1849 by Mormon pioneers. The first store was built in the town and operated by J.D. Anderson and his brother-in-law Amos Lankford. The town soon became a popular stop for travelers on the Pony Express route. In 1876, the United States Post Office opened in Superior, making it one of the first post offices in Colorado. The town saw rapid growth during its early years, with businesses such as a harness shop, grocery store, blacksmith shop and hotel opening up along with local schools and churches. By 1890, Superior had a population of over 1,000 people and was known for its fine architecture and antique shops. However, by 1907 the population had dwindled to just 100 people due to environmental factors such as drought and high unemployment rates in rural Colorado. In 1925, Superior merged with neighboring Unadilla to form Unadilla–Superior County which still exists today as an autonomous county within Colorado.
