Superior, Colorado is a town in Mesa County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,834 at the 2000 census. The first Europeans to visit Superior were the Spanish in 1809. A Mormon Battalion arrived in 1847 and founded the city of Independence on the east side of the San Juan River. The Mormons abandoned their settlement in 1849 when they were driven out by forces from Denver. In 1861, gold was discovered near Superior and a rush began for deposits. Businesses expanded rapidly as men prospected for ore and silver. By 1880, there were over 100 businesses with a total payroll of $1 million. Mining operations ceased in 1984 but remain an important part of local economy with over $2 billion worth of minerals mined here since then. Today Superior is one of few towns remaining where mining took place before agriculture became dominant. The village that grew up around mining had several names including Independence (1849-60), Cache (1861-67), Golden (1868-72), Star City (1873-79), American Fork (1980-84) and Silver Queen (1985-90). With such a rich history it’s no surprise that today there are several museums associated withmining life including Gold Rush Museum & History Museum which tells the story of gold discoveries and exploration in western Wyoming; Pioneer Mine Historical Park which preserves artifacts from various mines located throughout central Colorado; and Canyonlands National Monument which features many interesting ruins from ancient cultures including those at Zuni Pueblo

Superior is a small town in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,613 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville–Jasper, IN-MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Superior was John A. Gault on December 3, 1868. Gault built a cabin on a knoll overlooking the creek that later became Superior Creek. On November 20, 1869, three men from Illinois named Hennepin and McClusky arrived in Superior and camped near what is now Old US Highway 287 south of town. They were travelling to Nevada when they met two prospectors traveling west on Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard; one name for each man claimed land next to their campsite (the Grants had also come from Illinois). This early claim may have been the first legal settlement east of the Arkansas River in Douglas County or anywhere within present-day Colorado Territory! In 1870, Major Edwin Fenton surveyed lots in what are now Superior and Park counties for settlers who would build homes along water fronts or along Cache Valley Road as transportation improved with railroad construction. These early settlers included David Denny and his brother James Denny (father of Congressman James Denny), Asahel Parsons (founder of Aurora), Isaac Morehouse (baptized as Elijah), Amos Northrup (builder of Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad depot), John Fenton (founder of Waco) and Daniel Webster Sr., all from Massachusetts. In 1871 Mr. Webster granted homesteads to fifty eight people including fifteen brothers: Augustus Mifflin II, George Washington III and Hiram Webster Jr., all born in Worcester City but living near Boston where their father had served as Mayor since 1830; cousins Amos Northrup Jr., Levi Hudson and Solomon Northrup among others; six sisters: Catherine Cheney, Margaret Thornton Quincy and Sarah Noyes; four brothers-in-law: Nathaniel Cornwallis Strongback II’s son Nicholas Windsor Randolph’s son Michael Ladd III’s son Henry Wadsworth Longfellow—and two sets of parents: Archibald Brooke Bigelow Sr.'s grandson Edward Bigelow's son Alfred Everett Crane—all from Worcester City but living at Larimer House outside Chelsea while their children were attending school there; five uncles: Samuel Eliot Norton Jr.; Israel Putnam Howe; Lyman Beecher Stowe III’s nephew Increase Marston—all natives of Plymouth Colony but living near Provo temple until after its evacuation during the American Revolution by British forces under Sir William Johnson in 1776—and three great grandparents: John Adams Ives; Abijah Folger
In 1876, the Denver and Rio Grande Railway was completed from Denver to Antonito. The following year, the company built a line from Trinidad to Superior. In 1888, the company constructed a branch of the railroad from Leadville to Superior. The first train reached Superior on October 5th.
