Superior is a small town located in Adams County, Colorado, United States. It was founded in 1864 by men from the nearby towns of Loveland and Englewood. The first post office opened in 1865. In 1880, Superior became the county seat of Adams County. The population was 2,536 at the 2010 census. The town was originally named "Englewood" after John Englewood, a local resident and cattleman who donated land to the town site. When Englewood's holdings were sold off in 1868, Superior renamed itself for him. Superior has had two mayors: George Fenton (1890-94) and Prentice Murchison (1904-07). The current mayor is Democrat Caleb Myrick. The town lies within the Englewood School District which serves students grades K-8th grade; however, it does not have its own high school or primary school building housing students grades 9-12th grade like other districts within Adams County do. There are four churches that serve as denominations within Superior: Methodist (1884), Presbyterian (1905), Roman Catholic (1911), Lutheran (1963) and Congregationalist/Episcopal (1964). And one business which provides services such as groceries and repair shops: First National Bank of Superior. In 2006, Superior also celebrated its centennial year - having been founded on October 15th of that year by then Mayor Prentice Murchison with help from his predecessor George Fenton - making it one of only a handful U.S.'s communities to achieve this milestone in its history. In recent years there has been much redevelopment taking place around the town center including an expansion of liquor stores alongMain Street called "The Super Store", a new senior citizens community called "Omni Village", an indoor playground complete with batting cages and air conditioning available for use during summer months as well as a number of restaurants As previously mentioned, one major attraction for tourists visiting Superior isits Centennial Celebration parade every October - which typically features live music throughout Main Street from various artists local & national
In 1876, the United States acquired the land that makes up Superior, Colorado. The town of Superior was founded in 1876 on this land by a group of Mormon settlers. The town grew quickly and soon became a major agricultural center in the area. By 1903, Superior had a population of over 500 people. In 1909, the city of Superior was incorporated and began to grow rapidly. In 1922, the city annexed part of the neighboring community of Loveland. This annexation created an even larger city with a population of OVER 1,000 people by 1960!
