There has been a hard gun case history in Superior, Colorado for over 100 years. The firsthard gun cases were brought to the attention of the law enforcement community by John Wesley Hardin, who was a justice of the peace and early pioneer in this area. In 1879, Hardin was indicted for possession of a revolver without a license in Douglas County. He was later acquitted on appeal after showing that he had possessed the gun for target practice and not for sale or use as an weapon. The first real prosecution of someone accused of owning a handgun occurred in 1903 when George Stephenson was arrested on suspicion of carrying an unlicensed pistol in Weld County. Stephenson successfully argued that he had only beencarrying the firearm for target practice and that he did not know it was illegal to possess a rifle or shotgun with scope within city limits. The trial jury found Stephenson guilty but agreed to recommend his sentence to the court rather than jail time because they believed him capable of controlling his own actions while incarcerated. In 1955, Adolph Hitler’s secret police, Gestapo, raided and captured several Denver businesses while conducting Operation Northwoods. One of these businesses belonged to movie producer Samuel Goldwyn and his wife United Artists Studios. Because Gestapo believed that all Jews living inside Germany were subject to capture and concentration camps, they decided to raid Goldwyn’s home instead. As it turned out, only one person inside- Goldwyn himself- was caught during this raid and subsequently released without charge despite being under close surveillance by Gestapo agents throughout the entire incident! In 1969, Colorado State Patrol Trooper Dale Bissonnette killed 21-year old Kenneth Lassiter after finding him holding two handguns at an abandoned farm northeast of Longmont on Highway 725 near Golden Valley Reservoir (now known as Horseshoe Lake). Although Bissonnette claimed self defense at the time he shot Lassiter with his service revolver (he had pulled over in accordance with posted speed Limits), criminal charges were eventually filed against him after autopsy results revealed that Lassiter died from gunshot wounds caused by both firearms he carried into confrontations with state troopers earlier that year! This became oneofthe most controversial homicide cases in Colorado history due to public outcry over what many saw as excessive force used by Bissonnette during what could have been another nonviolent encounter!

Superior, Colorado is a small town located in the mountain range of Rocky Mountains in Weld County, Colorado. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. The name Superior comes from an old Gunnison Siouxword meaning "the place where the sun shines." The first settler in this area was George Hinkle. He and his family were pioneers who arrived here in 1859. They built a log cabin on what is now First Street and named it after their home state of Vermont. It wasn't until 1868 that they started to grow crops and build up their community. In 1880, they had 12 residents and three businesses. By 1890, they had over 100 residents and four businesses including a livery stable, grocery store, post office and two hotels. In 1912, Superior became part of the newly formed Denver-Aurora metropolitan area when Aurora annexed the neighboring towns of Westminster and Golden Valley. It remained part of this metropolitan area until it was dissolved by annexation byDenver in 1986. By 1920, Superior had won its first major distinction when it became one of only five communities to receive city status within Denver's limits as part of efforts to promote urban development within the city limits which then included all eight wards which made up downtown Denver (then called 'the business district'). Today there are no wards within Downtown Denver except for 5th Ave., 10th Ave., 16th St., 17th St., 19th St., 20th St., 23rd Ave & 24th Ave which make up Roosevelt Park - making Superior part of Historic Midtown district since 1987 instead of Downtown Denver ward boundaries unchanged through annexation! jsullivan@aol
