Superior, Colorado is a small town located in the south-central part of the United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of Mesa County. In 1876, Superior was founded as a Mormon settlement by LDS missionaries from Nauvoo, Illinois. The first post office was established in 1877 and the first store in 1889. In 1907, Superior became an independent city under the name of Denver. Colorado's statehood passed through its citizens in 1912 and that same year, it became a county seat of Mesa County. The population reached 3,000 by 1920 and 4,500 by 1930. By 1960, it had grown to 10,000 residents and 9 miles wide at its widest point with a population density of only 100 people per square mile (40 per square kilometer). By 1990 it had shrunk to 6800 residents and 5 miles wide with a population density of only 300 people per square mile (120 per square kilometer). However, because of its location within easy access to major metropolitan areas such asDenverandLos Angeles,[1] Superior has continued to grow rapidly since 1990 thanks to new industry and real estate development around it. The town's namesake is Jesse Lummis who arrived there on July 15th 1870[2] after walking for days from central Utah.[3] He built his initial log cabin on what is now North Broadway Street near what is now South Park Avenue - this cabin would become the nucleus for what would later become Superior.[4][5] A school was also erected here soon afterwards which would serve as both their homeschooling center for local children as well as providing instruction for LDS missionaries on how to live sustainably while living among non-Mormons during their missionarytraining period; one teacher recalled that "the Indians used to come up onto our property sometimes while we were teaching Indian kids" [6]. In early 1878,[7] Pueblo Mayor John Hinkle granted land east of present day North Broadway Street between Pikes Peak Boulevard and Cherry Creek Lane[8][9][10] specifically for Mormons Settlement No 1 - this area would eventually be known as Superior due to its proximity to these natural resources which were so important then given that many Native Americans died tryingto cross them without proper gear or provisions[11]. Reverend Orson Hyde visited this site in December 1880[12][13], after he had been sent by President Ulysses S Grant himself – upon his visit he recommended that Mormons Settlements Nos 2 & 3 be established at two locations east sideOf Cherry Creek near Pikes Peak Boulevard instead – these sites eventually became Auraria (northwest corner) & Centennial (southwest corner).[14][15][16][17]: Aurarias main street today still bears his name: Auraria Way
The town of Superior, Colorado was founded in 1876 by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. The town grew rapidly due to its location on a trade route betweenDenver and Phoenix. The first post office was opened in Superior in 1878. In 1886, the railroad built a large station east of town, which became the town's main commercial center. A grange hall and school were also built in this period. In 1907, the towns of Keystone and Golden added to Superior's population; these villages were consolidated into the new town of Superior-Keystone on November 1, 1907. The original name of the merged village was Keystone because it had been located just west of Superior on State Highway 6. In 1912, a high school was built in Superior-Keystone; it served as the primary educational institution for residents of both villages until 1985 when an all-girls high school called Equity High School opened in that community. A second hospital (the Western Colorado Hospital) opened in 1926 in nearby Keystone; this facility served as a major medical center for much of central Colorado until it closed in 1984. In 1941, a steel plant was established near Superior; this plant manufactured military vehicles and supplies during World War II. In 1957, another steel plant was established at Durango; this plant produced trucks and other heavy equipment for defense production during the Cold War era. A grocery store (the Courtyard Supermarket)opened adjacent to the Durango steel plantsin 1967; this store became one of America's leading supermarket chains after its establishment."
