Prior to the arrival of the Mormons in 1847, there were a number of Native American groups living in and around Superior. The Ute people were one of these groups. They lived on the east side of the mountain, near what is now Park City. The Arapaho also lived around Superior. The first Europeans to visit Superior were members of an expedition led by Captain James Fetterman in 1820. They explored the area and named it after Governor John Evans's home state, Vermont. In 1830, Brigham Young moved his family from Illinois to Colorado and founded Nauvoo here. He later organized a group of Mormon pioneers called the Hyrumites who left for Utah in 1839. Some years later another group of Mormon pioneers came through this area, led by Parley P Pratt. Pratt converted most or all of the local Native Americans to Mormonism before he died in 1850 at age 44 near present-day Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Later that year Brigham Young's brother Samuel purchased 4,000 acres (1 km²) north of Superior along Bear Creek from David Farnsworth for $360 (). This land became known as Nauvoo Land (). It was not until November 1860 when a large force from General George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry Regiment arrived at Winter Quarters () just south of present-day Parker County and encountered hostile Sioux Indians who had been living among the local Native Americans since 1786 (). Lieutenant Colonel Charles Wetherbee ordered his troops to fire upon these Indians instead (), resulting in over 100 fatalities including many brave young men from Custer's regiment . Aftermaths included harsh Indian treatment which continues up until this day; see Buffalo Soldiers . Shortly thereafter General Fremont arrived with his army (), driving out all remaining Indian tribes within Wyoming ().
