The town began as an agricultural outpost and gradually became a bedroom community for Aurora until its annexation by Denver in 1905. Today, Superior has emerged as a prosperous shopping and commercial center with heavy industry including two large aluminum smelters and several small businesses. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Arapahoe County were Spanish missionaries who established Santa Fe Trail headquarters at present-day Manitou Springs in 1799. In 1814, prospectors discovered gold near what is now Superior; this led to increased traffic along the nearbyDenver & Rio Grande Western Railroad which depotized at Superior soon after. In 1872, John Wesley Powell explored and mapped most of modern Colorado while working for mining company GoldRush Ventures Ltd.; he named many of today's counties after his main partners (Auraria, Douglas, Grant, San Miguel). In 1906 Denver annexed Auraria Township; when that occurred one resident said: "This makes Denver complete." That same year residents voted to create their own municipality; they chose the name "Supreme" because it had been picked as one of three finalists from nominations given by Aurora authorities regarding a proposed new municipal name (the other two being "Erie" and "Broomfield"). Supremacy served local needs until 1957 when it incorporated intoDenver under its current name when all but Aurora were annexed into that city proper within five years of each other following passage of state legislation creating Arapahoe County governmental districts rather than leaving inhabitants hav ing jurisdiction over unincorporated areas subject only to city or county jurisdiction. Supreme currently forms part of District 3b covering most parts of North Adams and Durango Counties eastward towards Parker Ranch Reservoir although some portions extend into Jefferson County due to overlapping jurisdictions between those rural counties and Parker Ranch Reservoir even though that reservoir lies entirely within Arapahoe County proper!

Superior, Colorado is a small town in Garfield County, Colorado. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. Superior was founded on July 14, 1865 by settlers from New Mexico and Kansas. In 1868, it became the county seat for Garfield County. The first post office in Superior opened in 1869. The name of the town was chosen based on its location at an elevation above sea level between Weld and Arapaho counties on the Arkansas River Valley floor (now known as North Park). At that time there were no settlements other than small hamlets near Douglas Lake on the lower Arkansas River valley floor where people hunted buffalo and fished for catfish and trout. In 1870 the first school building was erected in Superior; it served as a community hall until 1899 when a new high school campus was built adjacent to what is now First United Methodist Church (founded 1876). That same year, two miles north of Superior along Ute Creek Road, a stagecoach stop called "The Horseshoe" became available and became one of many locations used by travelers travelling between Aurora and Denver during that era. In 1898 Elihu Root took up residence at The Horseshoe after purchasing 6 acres nearby from Nicholas Gist for $5 per acre (about $140 per square mile) which he intended to use as his estate rancho San Miguelito de la Garza next door to LaGarza House which had been built by Governor John Evans in 1849-50 while serving as Lieutenant governor of Colorado under Kit Carson’s administration Eliu Root continued to live at The Horseshoe until his death in 1948.— more
The town of Superior was founded in 1872 when the California and Arizona Railroad built a line from Rifle to Superior. The town quickly grew, and by 1886 it had a population of over 500 people. In 1902, the railroad was purchased by the Colorado Railway Company, and Superior became part of the new company. The railway continued to grow, and by 1959 Superior had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1963, the company merged with the Denver-Aurora Railway Company, and Superior became part of that company's system. The old railroads were abandoned in the early 1970s, and there is now no evidence that they ever served any real purpose other than providing transportation for miners and their families.
