The town of Superior was built around this event and commemorates it with a marker at its southeast corner that reads "Captain John Sutter's Expedition - July 1865". The original settlers were Native Americans who had moved from eastern Kansas into Weld County during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. They began farming land around what is now Superior in 1875 and started trading goods with members of other tribes along the railroad line betweenDenver and Fort Collins.
