In 1892, Simeon Dolan founded Superior Mine and Smelting Company which became one of the largest copper mines inColorado. The mine closed in 1919 but reopened in 1930 as Superior Copper Mines Incorporated The company was sold to Canadian mining interests in 1961 and ceased operations that year. It has been inactive since then except for occasional visits by employees from Canadian companies who continue working at the mine today as part of a tourist industry attraction called " superior copper".
