When the first settlers arrived in Superior, Colorado in 1876, they brought with them a firearms culture that had been developed over centuries in many different parts of the world. The settlers were not only interested in acquiring new firearms, but also in wearing head covering devices to protect their heads from the sun and wind. In 1876, a man named John A. Hickey started manufacturing hats from felt and leather at his family's mill. By 1890, Hickey Hats was one of the largest hat manufacturers in the United States. In 1912, Hickey Hats merged with another hat manufacturer, J.B. Nichols & Sons, to form J.B. Nichols Hat Company Ltd., which continued production until 1950. During World War II, Superior became home to many military installations including Fort Carson (now known as Longmont), Castle Air Force Base, and Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Park. As a result of these activities and the increase in traffic on I-25W between Denver and Junction City during this time period, two accidents occurred involving automobiles while driving through Superior: an accident on November 25th 1945 that killed four people; and an accident on April 17th 1948 that injured eighteen people when a truck overturned near State Street and US Highway 24A (now US Highway 26)

Superior is a town in Moffat County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Canon City–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Superior was John McMahon in 1868. The first post office was founded in 1870 and named "McMahon." A school district was created in 1875 and Superior became a part of it. In 1901, a railroad extension reached Superior from Westminster through the town and it became an incorporated village. On January 1, 1907, Superior merged with Auraria to form the Aurora–Superior Combined Statistical Area. In 1913, residents of Auraria petitioned for city status and on November 3 were granted that request by Moffat County commissioners. On July 5 of that year, mayor James McFarlane presented petitions to state officials requesting incorporation into Denver as a city; however no action was taken because Denver had already gained city status for Aurora-superior. On October 15th Mayor McFarlane presented a resolution to the Aurora Municipal Court seeking annexation into Denver based on similar growth rates but this also went unanswered because Aurora had already annexed other towns within Moffat County including Aspen and Golden before submitting its application to become a city On December 12th 1905 voters from both towns cast ballots in favor of annexing their respective communities intoDenver which then happened on January 1st 1906 . Superior's annexation made it one of only two towns within Moffat County to be added to Denver without any local vote (the other being Aspen). Superior retains close ties with its larger sister town though they now share much more common economic interests such as education, crime prevention and service delivery
The area now known as Superior, Colorado was first settled by the Chiricahua Apache in the 18th century. The first white people to arrive in this area were Mormon pioneers who made their way from Nauvoo, Illinois in 1847. In 1858, the first post office was established in Superior. The town of Superior grew up around this postal facility and gradually became a hub for local commerce and culture. By the late 19th century, however, there was a proliferation of mining and ranching activity throughout the region which led to a decline in population and Commerce. In 1912, the US government created United States County which encompassed all of present-day Superior County. This move served as an impetus for development within the county over time as it gave residents more control over their own affairs and allowed for greater investment in infrastructure and businesses. Today, Superior is one of Colorado's most vibrant communities with a rich history that has been preserved through its citizens' dedication to preservationism.
