The town was founded on the current site of Superior in 1861 by surveyors working for theDenver and Rio Grande Railroad. The first post office in Superior opened in 1865. By 1895, the population had grown to over 1,500 residents and the town incorporated as a city. As a municipality, Superior enjoyed many benefits such as voting rights in state elections and free postage on all mail delivered within its borders. Starting in the late 1800s, gold mining activity began to increase around Superior; this led to increased development and growth in the town. In 1907, mineral exploration finally yielded valuable gold mines near Superior; these mines soon became known as Superior Gold Mines Incorporated. soon after becoming one of America's largest gold mining companies with operations spanning from Denver to Chihuahua City Mexico. In 1915, when World War I started, Superiors mayor recommended that their city be evacuated due to fears of German aggression however their request was denied because Colorado Springs was already under martial law at that time
