The town made efforts to address these problems by creating parks and green spaces as well as developing new technologies such as gaslighting systems which eliminated light from windows during daylight hours so residents could sleep undisturbed

Sterling is a small town in Montrose County, Colorado, United States. The population was 2,534 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1887 as Sterling City by John and Emma Crouse. In 1889, the town became part of Montrose County. Sterling has been home to the Sterling Community School District since 1912. The first settler in what is now Sterling was Cecil Harger who arrived in 1887 from Illinois via wagon train. He built a log cabin on the east side of Town Creek and named it Sterling City after his hometown of Sterling, Illinois (now Danville). A post office was established at Sterling City on November 15, 1888, and operated for six months. In 1889, when Montrose County was created from parts of Logan and Park counties, the new county seat was moved from Danville to Sterling City. The population of Sterling increased rapidly due to its location near irrigated land that had been purchased by cattle owners for their herds during the early 1890s boom period. By 1901 there were over 100 residents living in sterling and 20 businesses employing over 50 workers including a hotel/cafeteria/lumber store/grain elevator etc.. During World War I, sterling served as an airfield for the local military squadron which included planes flown by aviators such as Clarence "Cyclone" English and Harry Suggs Sr.. After World War II ended, most assets associated with Air Force Station nearby Beech-Nut Field were sold off orleased to private developers and continued operation until closure in 1984 adjacent to Interstate 25 north of town limits
