This high population growth rate has been due to both its location near major east-west transportation corridors as well as its proximity to other rural communities in northeast Colorado that have taken up residence since the late 1990s when oil and gas exploration began to take hold in southeastern Denver County. Today, Sterling remains an isolated small town with a strong sense of community spirit that allows for tightknit relationships between residents. Its citizens are proud of their history and culture which has contributed greatly to their unique place within society today.
