Sterling is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,453 at the 2010 census. Sterling is located on the edge of the Rockies and bordered by Aspen to the north, Golden to the east, Pueblo to the southeast and Park City to the south. The city is part of the Denver-Aurora metropolitan area. Sterling began as a trading post on State Road 25 in 1875 and now has a population of over 1,500 people. The first settler in Sterling was George Aiken who arrived in 1875 from Illinois with his family. He built a cabin on what is today Main Street. In 1899 local pioneer John Sutherland purchased land adjacent to present-day Fountain Valley Ranch where he founded Sutton Springs Ranching Company which later became known as Sutton Hills Ranching Company. In 1911 Sterling had its own school system when it opened up for students from neighboring towns like Aspen and Golden along with nearby Thorntonville School District 7th grade schools that were closed due to lack of enrollment in those years. Today there are four high school districts serving Sterling: Northwest High School District 9th-12th grades; Southwestern High School District 10th-12th grades; Stantonburg Area School District 11th through 13th grades which includes parts of Northwest High SchoolDistrict 9th-12thgrades; Middle Platte Area School District 14th through 16thschools which includes parts of Southwest HighSchoolDistrict 10th-12rdgrades In 1935 Aurora Chamberlin constructed her largest employer until she retired – an airplane manufacturing plant known as Aurora Aircraft Corporation – taking over much of what was then open farmland west side Of town near current day Parker Center Mall location across I-25 from Post Office/GPS
