Sterling is a town in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,737 at the 2010 census. Sterling is part of the Westminster–Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Sterling was John Hargrave in 1875. The town was founded on the east side of US Highway 24 by Cecil and Lula Chamberlain in 1907. In 1923, Sterling became one of three towns to be created from parts of Aurora Township. In 2007, Sterling had an economic downturn as a result of the Great Recession and its accompanying jobs loss. However, since then it has seen growth as a bedroom community for Aurora and Park City. The town has also become known for its Christmas tree ornaments which are displayed year-round at Main Street Square near the post office. Sterling was founded in 1879 by J. Sterling Price and his brothers, John, Andrew and George. The town was named for the sterling silver coins that were then being produced in Great Britain. The first store was built on Main Street in 1881. In 1907, the Price family merged with the Loomis family to form the Loomis-Landon company. This led to a dramatic change in Sterling’s history as it became one of the most important silver mining communities in Colorado. From 1907 until it ceased operations in 1978, Sterling had a vibrant economic life due to its significant Silver Mining District and its production of coins and other jewelry products such as earrings and pendants. The townsite which includes parts of what is now Sterling was platted by James Wetherbee at an intersection of two wagon trails called “the Garter Path” near present-day Aspen Hills Road and Keystone Lake Boulevard on July 14, 1878. Wetherbee offered $1,000 for any claims discovered within twelve miles of his location. By 1880, fourteen claimants had submitted claims totaling over 9 acres (3 hectares). The first post office opened at this site on October 3rd, 1881 under the name “Aurora” after Aurora Borealis – one of several names given to this new locality because First Denver Postmaster Alfred Sells believed that local residents would call their newly minted coins Auroras since they bore no resemblance to British gold sovereigns he had been receiving from London merchants. The original town plat included a schoolhouse (1881), general store (1881), blacksmith shop (1882), four homes (1882), two churches (1883) and three cottages (1885). When word got out about this rich deposit some brave souls decided it would be a good idea to prospect for silver nearby not knowing whatsoever about where or how much gold could be found along with it! It didn't take long before people realized that if they could find enough silver they could create valuable coinage itemizing different grades VF2/AU$20 etc… but much work still needed to be done before anything like actual money could come out OF THIS SILVER FIELD!
