In 1898, Union Pacific Railroad built a track through town and began serving local settlers east of Aurora. In 1905, several new buildings were built in downtown Stanton by local businessmen to serve as their businesses' homes while they awaited construction of railroad tracks that would connect them to Aurora. That same year saw the opening of Keystone Liquor Store #1 on Main Street by local grocer Rufus Kappesmeier and his son Abe Kappesmeier (a future mayor). This store became one of the most popular stops for motorists traveling through town during summertime because it offered ice cream from six scoops per container! In 1945, when Greeley became an independent city, sterling became its first municipal center and remained so until 1984 when it merged into Greeley-Aurora metropolitan statistical area
