Sterling is a town in Logan County, Colorado, United States. The population was 3,868 at the 2000 census. Sterling is part of the Grand Junction Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sterling was founded in 1872 by John A. Sterling and his family and named for George Custer. The first post office in Sterling was established in 1892. The town took its name from George Custer when he was killed during the伯爵克里斯莱德战争 of 1876. In 1915, World War I veteran Edwin Haines bought land east of town and began to build a dam on the San Juan River to create Lake Dillon for irrigation purposes. He later donated land to the city of Grand Junction to use as an open-air parkland which still exists today (Haines Park). After World War II, Sterling became known as a center for auto manufacturing due to its location near the Denver-Colorado Springs line. In 1957, Chrysler Corporation moved its plant there from Scranton, Pennsylvania after buying Dodge automobiles from New York's Rooty Hill Automobiles Company. The plant closed in 1978 but left an important legacy on sterling through products such as Plymouth Hemispheres and Plymouth Neons exported around the world until they were replaced by General Motors models in 2002
