Sterling, Colorado is a small town located in the Rocky Mountains of north-central Colorado. The town has been inhabited for over 100 years and is known as the "Gunsmoke Capital of the World." Sterling was founded by Mormons who came from Salt Lake City in 1847. The town was named after John A. Sterling, an American businessman and pioneer in mining and lumbering. In 1896, Sterling became a city under the name of Denver. The first gun Safe company to be established in Sterling was Brown & Root safe company which was started by two men, Cornelius H. Brown and Wm. Root on July 1st, 1892. The business continued until 1903 when it merged with Saunders Safe and Storage Company which had been organized two years earlier by William Fenton Saunders (1852-1924) of Littleton, Colorado as a storage/safe store/gunsmiths shop dealing in handguns only. At that time there were only four gunSafe companies operating in America: Brown & Root (now Safeway), Saunders (now Gray's Sporting Goods), Colt Firearms Corporation (now Bushnell Firearms) and wiped out by prohibition when it became illegal to purchase or possess any rifle or handgun not registered with the government! In 1907, Harry Crouch opened his own gun Safe company - Crouch Gun Safes -in addition to his grocery store at 6th Avenue South and Stout Street in downtown Denver serving residents of both cities along with rural areas east of Interstate 25 including Sterling Heights on Clear Creek Valleyptr.. On November 15th 1907 Harry Crouch succumbed to pneumonia while traveling from Chicago to Dallas for an exhibition at the Texas State Fairgrounds where he had agreed to exhibit firearms made by him, his sons Dick Grouse Crouch (born October 14th 1926) owner/operator of Porter's Arsenal Ammunition factory(Now Smith&Wesson Manufacturing Co.)and Don Richard Nevin Currie owner/operator of Currie Guns Supply Incorporated). Dick Grouse Crouch later served as Mayor of Denver from 1993-2001 From 1916 through 1919 Joe Baca operated a gun Safe business called Deely's Armory near 9th Avenue South between Cherry St./Steele St., now part of Pikes Peak Mall . From 1919 through 1924 Earle DeSigne ran a pawnbroker shop at Eighth Avenue South between Westminster Blvd./Alpha Ave., now part of Golden Corral Casino . From 1925 until 1951 Lester Ludden operated Jensens Gun Shop on Third Street SE between Jefferson Boulevard SE and 16th Ave SW . In 1951 Lester Ludden sold his business to Ewell Sellers who operates today’s Jensens Gun Store located at 711 S Princeton Drive just south east Of I-25 near Keystone Ranch

This created severe economic conditions that continue to this day; even today many businesses operate only part time due to high costs associated with maintaining infrastructure necessary for heavy traffic including transportation taxes levied on local residents commuting into and out of town on I-25
