Sterling is a small town in Chaffee County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,719 at the 2010 census. The Sterling School District serves the community. Sterling is located on US Highway 6 and the Atlee-Benton county line. Sterling started as a cattle and sheep ranch in 1881 by John A. Atlee and his brother-in-law Arthur Benton. In 1902, Harry Ladds opened a store in town that became one of Sterling's most well known businesses for its grocery items and other supplies for farmers in the area. In 1916, H C Richardson opened his first general store here also serving as a post office until it closed in 1984. In 1958, Discosax published its first issue of "Discothèque des Contes". This was followed by another issue every month from 1959 to 1966 which gave new impetus to the local economy due to increasing tourism in nearby Aspen while also advertising local events such as rodeos and summer concerts which drew people from all over the state of Colorado to visit these small towns along the Arkansas River valley near Aspen Mountain foothills during those days before air travel took over much of this activity. In 1979, Sterling experienced its first fire when an arsonist set light to several automobiles parked outside of town on Main Street early that morning

Sterling, Colorado is a small town located in Mesa County, Colorado. Sterling was founded in 1868 by John and Anna Sterrett. The Sterrett family had originally come from Lewis and Clark County, Oregon. They erected the first store in Sterling in 1868. In 1865, Anna Sterrett married George Prentice and they started a farm north of town on the Bright Angel River. In 1870, the Prentice farm was bought by J.C. Phelps and Son who moved it to what is now Northridge Boulevard near I-25 West. From there, Phelps ran a general store and post office until his death in 1927. The population of Sterling increased gradually until it reached its peak at around 100 people in 1940 when World War II caused the decline of the local economy. With no major industry left to support the community, many residents abandoned their homes during the war years as opportunities for work were limited outside of Denver or Fort Collins respectively
