Sterling, Colorado is located in the Central Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The town was founded in 1875 by American gold miners and cattlemen. In 1924, Sterling became a ski resort. The population was 1,906 as of the 2010 census. Sterling has a warm climate with average temperatures ranging from 14° to 28° F (6° to 12° C). According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Sterling has a cold-summer Mediterranean climate. The name "Sterling" comes from the Swiss word "sterlinge", meaning fine silver coin or coins worth 2 francs or 8 English pennies. The first store in Sterling opened on Main Street in 1875. At that time, it was one of only two businesses in town and there were no banks available to handle money transactions. Merchant George Aiken opened his first grocery store at 9th and Market Streets in 1898 after purchasing land adjoining the old Drugstore building on Main Street where he now operates his business today. He remained proprietor until 1923 when he sold his interest to Prentice Lumber Company Limited which later merged with International Harvester Company Limited forming what is now Briggs Manufacturing Company Incorporated (IHC). From 1923 until 1984 IHC operated as an arm of Hewlett-Packard Co., Ltd., one of America's leading technology companies then known as HPE plc.- In 1924, Sterling became a ski resort when North Face Corporation leased land from local farmers for use as their winter training area for skiers and snowboarders seeking instruction and equipment rentals during the off season; this was followed by other resorts across central Colorado Springs at nearby Aspen Mountain Resort (now Aspenspring), Keystone Lake Resort (later Golden Eagle Ranch), Telluride Ski Area (later Telluride Resorts), Breckenridge Ski Area (later Breckenridge Hotel/Resort) and Tomahawk Peak Resort & Spa (later Park City Hotels & Resorts Inc.) throughout the early 21st century; these developments led to what is now known as "the skiing years". It is named after Lafayette, France, where John Sterling had been born in 1814. The community was originally located on the east side of the San Miguel River near present-day Fort Collins. In 1908, the town annexation created a new township which merged with Sterling in 1912. Undermining began in Sterling during the early 1900s as oil and gas were discovered there. However, it wasn't until 1925 when drilling began on what would become known as "The Well" that mining became an issue for local residents and businesses alike. By 1933, over seventy rigs were working commercially in nearby Telluride and Pikes Peak counties; however, when production peaked around 1945 due to wartime demand for aluminum billets (a type of fuel), Sterling's economy took a beating and its citizens lost their jobs as well as their homes In 1951, Sterling voters passed a resolution condemning United States participation in World War II based on allegations that munitions plants had been built within their borders without proper zoning or environmental review In 1957-1959 management of Rocky Mountain Gas & Electric Co., one of America's largest natural gas providers motivated relocation efforts among the minority group of black Americans living within miles of Denver who felt disenfranchised by white society Reflecting local sentiment against white hegemony through mural art characterized by bright colors and geometric patterns inspired locals to work together to install electric power lines across much of downtown from storage tanks hidden beneath cars parked along Main Street
