Sterling, Colorado is a small town located in the Gunnison Valley of south-central Colorado. The population was 579 at the 2010 census. The name Sterling comes from an early settler, John S. Sterling. The first post office in Sterling was established in 1877 and changed its name to Gunnisonville in 1881. The current spelling of the town's name was adopted in 1959. The history of Sterling begins with two wagonloads of settlers who arrived on the Manzano River during the gold rush of 1849. These pioneers founded Fort Lyon about four miles (6 km) southeast of town on July 3, 1859. For a time, Fort Lyon served as the capital of southwestern Colorado because it had more residents and businesses than any other settlement within sight of Denver. As mining operations expanded into what is now north-central Colorado during the late 19th century, many new settlements were built along the Gunnison River and around Canisteo Creek: Garden City (1898), Keystone (1902), Northglenn (1907), Southglen (1910), Stanton (1920). Most notably, Rushmore National Monument was created adjacent to Canisteo Creek on November 15, 1912 by President Woodrow Wilson as a result of his New Deal program to help promote American industry and agriculture throughout America through land acquisition and conservation efforts. In 1927, when Sterling's population reached 795 people, construction began on what would become known as Main Street - one of only two streets in town - followed by additional development over the next several decades including a high school (1970), a grocery store/convenience store(1975), apartments/condominiums(1985), a theater(1991), nightlife(1995) and more recently restaurants/bars(2010). During this time period also occurred some important civic developments such as merger between neighboring towns Keystone and Garden City which created an incorporated village; establishment of Rushmore National Monument; creation of Soils Conservation Association; formation by local voters of Planned Parenthood Aurora Health Care Cooperative Inc.; installation of new streetlights; initiation by Mayor Tom Kappelmanof incorporation into cityhood status for which he currently serves as mayor pro tem; transformationof downtownfromanopenair pedestrian malltoacorecityservicecenterwithnewinfrastructureandenhanced facilitiesfor citizensincludingavanaughparkandthelargestmanufacturingfacilityinColorado
