Sterling, Colorado is a small town in the San Luis Valley of southwestern Colorado. The population was 1,663 at the 2010 census. Sterling is located on State Highway 34 and U.S. Route 285. In 1902, Sterling's post office opened and continued to serve until it closed on December 16, 1969. At that time, it was one of only two post offices in San Luis Valley with ZIP code 80537 (the other being Trinidad). As a small town, Sterling has developed its own economy with a variety of businesses including three banks (Four Corners National Bank, First Western Union Bank and US Bancorp) as well as several restaurants and stores. It also has a few dozen homes built between 1945-1950 during World War II when Sterling became part of the Army Air Forces' Ninth Air Force Base which served as a training ground for pilots from around the world

Sterling is a small town in the U.S. state of Colorado. It was named for Harry Sterling, an early settler and gold prospector who founded the town in 1872. Sterling is located in Weld County, about 25 miles (40 km) south of Denver and 40 miles (64 km) northwest of Fort Collins. The population was 3,000 at the 2010 census. The history of Sterling begins with its founding by Harry Sterling in 1872 as a small mining camp on the Poudre River north of modern-day Sterling Heights, Michigan. In 1875, he organized what became known as the "Golden Spike" Gold Rush Company to Exploration for Gold near Golden but failed to find any significant gold deposits worth exploiting. From this experience, Harry developed his own interests inmining lead and silver prospects along the Poudre River valley between Sterling and Golden. In 1896, when it was renamed to honor George Hinkle Sr., who had served as superintendent of public schools in Douglas County since 1889 and had helped develop Littleton into a thriving community adjacent to Sterling, Colorado; business development accelerated in both towns as people started making new investments rather than just prospecting for gold orsilver mines over long distances from home or taking part only temporarily during rushes associated with 19th century uprisings against Mexican rule throughout much ofwestern America such as that led to Manifest Destiny which feverishly promoted white settlement across nearly all western North America including northwestern Mexico land grants givenchyewards beginning around 1846 mostly under US president James K Polk's efforts although there were earlier rumblings leading up to Mexican American War including forced migration by Mexicans already living eastward from Texas Ranchos de las Navajas some 10 years earlier when clashes erupted between Native Americans over access to water resources supplies following Arapaho/Cherokee raids resulting in Waco siege – this later came full circle with Mexican American War being fought primarily by Anglo settlers supported by US military forces especially after huge influxes (over 1 million) naturalized Mexican citizens living westward relative mainly eastward fleeing war-related violence & economic destruction back East whence theyOklahoma City region formed largest city west side OKLAHOMA while eastern cities Houston & Dallas grew fastestIncludes today's Denver suburb Longmont
