The firearms industry in Sterling, Colorado has had a long and storied history. The area was first populated by the Arapaho and Cheyenne Sioux tribes, who hunted and gathered resources here. In 1876, the United States acquired land in what is now Sterling from Mexico for $10 million. This land was divided into two strips, one running north-south and the other east-west. The northern strip was given to Colorado and the southern Strip to Arizona. At this time, rifle manufacturers such as Colt began production in Sterling. In 1903, private concerns bought 100 acres of land south of town for $5 per acre; this area became known as "The Arsenal." It served as a manufacturing center for firearms including rifles, shotguns, pistols and machine guns. In 1907, the first modern schoolhouse in Sterling was built; it remains today as the town's only building still standing from that time period. In 1916, Mayor John Hall founded the Community Defense League which functioned as a Neighborhood Watch organization until 1935 when it merged with another organization called Citizens Patrol to become The Citizen's Patrol Association (CPA). The name changed again in 1951 to Sterling Police Department when it moved from its original location on Main Street across from City Hall to its current location at 8th Avenue and I-25th Street NE after being reoccluded from downtown due to crime rates there

The silvermining industry in Sterling declined after 1880 because of competition from other industries such as agriculture and ranching. However, some locals revivalized theSilvermining industry by starting new mine sites and producing more Silver than ever before. In 1916, Stanley Wesselt opened up one of America's biggest Silver mines at Golden Hill that produced over 1 million ounces of Silver per day! This Mine continued operation until it was shut down in 1984!
The first permanent European settlement in Sterling was made in 1827 when a group of United States citizens, led by Captain John A. Sterling, purchased the land from the local Native American tribe. The town started as a small collection of homes built around the edge of what is now downtown. By 1830, however, it had grown to include a jail and other public buildings. In 1832, the town became part of Colorado Territory and began to grow rapidly. By 1840, it had reached its current size and position as a trading post on the Arkansas River. The town proved successful in becoming an important center for trade and commerce within the territory. In 1846, however, Colorado was admitted into the Union as a separate country and Sterling lost its status as an important commercial center.
