The library continued to use them until 1975 when they were given away as part of a donation from Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt. It is the smallest community in Routt County and the second-smallest community inColorado Springs. Sterling has a post office with ZIP code 80918. The first settler in Sterling was J.F. Hickey who arrived on July 10, 1876. He named his new land Sterling after Vinton sterling, an Englishman who had settled near Larimer City in 1859. In 1916, Harry Sutter founded theSilverado Mining and Processing Company to mine silver and other minerals in Sterling proper as well as several surrounding miles of foothills and valleys. The company operated until it closed its doors in 1968 due to overproduction of silver ore. In 1951, Sterling contributed $10,000 towards the founding of University Park at Colorado Springs by then-Governor Ronald Reagan for use by Colorado Springs State Teachers College and Southern Colorado Normal School students studying for teacher licensure or degrees from those institutions while still attending school full time; which became University Park Campus today. In 2006, University Park Campus opened its doors to all students without discrimination based on race or gender identity or any other protected characteristic under state law as part of renovations to Old Main building on campus that included restoring much of the original architecture and contents dating back to 1909 when Sterling hosted one of Colorado's oldest universities (later renamed Regis UNIVERSITY). Today’s University Park Campus offers more than 100 undergraduate degree programs across 12 faculties including Arts & Sciences; Business Administration; criminology & criminal justice; education; engineering; health sciences/health care management; history; health professions/human resources management; languages & literatures ; mathematics ; music ; philosophy ; physical science ; social work .
