By 1870, Steamboat Springs had 2 brick buildings and 20 residents; it also boasted a stagecoach stop on historic Route 66 just north of downtown. However, during the late 1800s prosperity slowed down across Northern Colorado as mining activity decreased worldwide while technology advanced making hydraulic fracturing (fracking) more accessible which allowed oil production to increase significantly throughout much Western North America including parts of Steamboat Spring

Steamboat Springs was founded by James K. Polk and his brother John Knox in 1875 as a trading post on the Green River. Polk and John Knox founded the trading post called "Steamboat Spring" on the Green River north of present-day Steamboat Springs. The area now occupied by Steamboat Springs was first inhabited by Arapaho Native Americans who hunted game hereabouts for food and clothing during winter months when there was no hunting nearby to provide sustenance. After several years of thriving trade at "Steamboat Spring", the two brothers decided to move their operation some hundred miles upstream to what is now Auroras National Forest in order to take advantage of better resources and larger water supplies available there. By 1881, they had built a log cabin with additions including a flour mill from which they manufactured goods for local merchants and sold products through mail order (the first such service in America). In 1931, after experiencing rapid growth due to World War II military recruitment & housing shortages in Aurora, Steamboat Springs incorporation occurred as an unincorporated community within Fort Collins-Aurora metropolitan statistical area. At that time it had a population of 2,598 residents living in 576 homes across 34 acres located east off I-25and north off US 40 just outside downtown Aurora limits where new shopping centers were being constructed at that time while other businesses operated out of storefronts located around First Avenue NE & Keystone Boulevard SW between State Street&US 362nd Ave NW). Residents continued to use First Avenue NE & Keystone Boulevard SW as their main commercial artery until late night hrs when most activities ended or moved into new adjacent buildings/stripes developed southNW & west along I-25 immediately next door known then as "Midtown". In recent decades many changes have taken place within our community resulting in its current incarnation – both physically & economically!
