The towns original name was “Potter” after Pottersville in Virginia which had been renamed for General James Ketchum who decided to move his family here following the Mexican-American War (1846-48). When Congress passed the Act providing for Indian removal in 1863, they changed the name of Potter to “Steamboat Springs” because it was thought that this would make more sense than anything else given that these boats used water instead of horses or wagons to get here. The first hotel built in Steamboat SPRings was called the “Hilton Hotel” on Main Street which opened in 1886. Since then, many different businesses have opened up within Steamboat SPRings community – some still operating today including Butch Cassidy's Devils Canyon Saloon & Grill (founded 1934), Black Diamond Brewery (opened 1988), White Eagle Casino Resort (opened 2003), Siena Tavern & Restaurant (the oldest continuously running restaurant west of Pennsylvania) and much more!
The town of Steamboat Springs was founded in 1876 by John D. Rockefeller and his brother, Edwin. The name Steamboat Springs comes from the hot springs near the town. The first post office in Steamboat Springs was opened in 1879. In 1918, the city of Steamboat Springs incorporated as a municipal government with a population of about 30 people. The population peaked at around 150 people in 1930 before declining to about 60 people by the end of World War II.
