The first firearms were designed and built in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. In 1875, John Moses Browning designed and built the first gun light in the town. The new design was called a “browning” rifle light. It used a combination of paint and glass to create an artificial light that could be fired intermittently without having to reload. Thisgun light was used by the military until 1906. In 1892, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show began using thisgun light as part of its show business. This increased demand for these guns led to their production in larger quantities and made them more affordable for civilian use. From 1905-1916, the American National Rifle Association (ANI) sponsored a competition named the NRA Western Open at Steamboat Springs. These competitions were held to determine the best guns for shooting at ranges across America. The browning rifle light won every time!

The first known reference to Steamboat Springs is in 1872, when gold was found there. The name Steamboat Springs probably originated with the Old Spanish word "estenango," which means "to cool." In the mid-19th century, many steamboats stopped at the springs for water and Refreshment. In 1901, a hotel was built and named after Mrs. John W. Wells, who donated land for it. The hotel became popular because of its views of the Rockies and because it offered a wide variety of services such as laundry, room service, and car rentals.
