In the early 1800s, a group of men living in Steamboat Springs, Colorado decided they wanted to start a gunsmithing business. They named their business "The Riflemen Armory." The first rifle was made in 1819. In 1825, the armory became the first firearm factory in the United States. The company continued making firearms until 1898. During this time, The Riflemen Armory also started manufacturing clothing for both civilians and military use. In 1865, they produced the world's first full-face rebar armor shirt. From 1886-1892, The Riflemen Armory produced Army surplus rifles for sale to local militias and law enforcement agencies throughout Colorado and Wyoming. By 1912, The Riflemen Armory had stopped producing firearms but continued making clothing for civilians and military use until it closed its doors in 1918. Today, part of the building still stands as one of only a few remaining firearms factories in America from pre- World War I times!

In 1875, the first Steamboat Springs Gun Club had been formed and in 1896, the first pistol class was held. In 1911, a rifle class was added to the club and in 1916, a shotgun class was started. The club began using rifles for target shooting in 1918. Rifle and Shotgun classes were combined into one class in 1922 and pistol classes became separate again in 1928. In 1935, the first airgun class was organized and in 1938, an air rifle class was added. The club met frequently to discuss firearms problems until it disbanded on May 1st 1942 due to World War II mobilization.

The community of Steamboat Springs was founded by Mormons in 1868. The first post office was established in 1870. The name "Steamboat Springs" comes from a natural hot spring near the townsite. In 1875, the first steamboats arrived in Steamboat Springs and for many years it served as an important transportation stop on the North Platte River system. In 1886, Gold Rush seekers discovered significant amounts of gold near Steamboat Springs and soon popular mining operations began here. By 1898, over 1 million dollars had been mined from the ground around Steamboat Springs and it became one of Colorado's leading goldmining communities. However, during World War I (1914-18), coal mines were closed due to munitions production restrictions placed by President Woodrow Wilson; however, this did not mean thatSteamboat Spring's economy went inactive though it lost much of its early dynamism and importance due to technological advances in transportation which made such an operation more difficult or impossible than ever before to be conducted profitably today. Nevertheless during these tough times there were definite signs that things would turnaround when President Franklin D Roosevelt announced his New Deal program on April 16th 1933 - called "The Change". This massive effort aimed to improve education and jobs opportunities for Americans while reversing some key trends including declining birthrates nationwide as well as mass unemployment across America caused by lack of good paying industrial jobs with benefits available to workers - something that could be easily corrected if only people would take advantage of FDR's offer! Many people took FDR up on his offer because he had always shown himself to be somebody who cared about their behalf - someone they could trust! And so within just a few short months following his inauguration America experienced what has come to be known as The Great Depression; but like FDR said: "It can't happen again!" Not only did things improve for many Americans thanks largely to Roosevelt's New Deal policies but also business owners redeployed their energies towards creating new businesses rather than simply sitting on their fenders waiting for an opportunity to hit them! To this day Steamboat Springs remains one of those cases where entrepreneurialism flourishes despite economic stressors! As you drive through town center you will see evidence both old and new dating back over 100 years...a testament not just to the town’s history but also its resilience in current times!
