In 1892, Steamboat Springs had a population of just over 1,000. But within the next decade, that number surged to more than 5,000 as people flocked to the small town for its scenic hills and beautiful waters. The miners who had founded Steamboat Springs in the 1860s were still at work, and their families continued to live there until after World War II. Firearms were a big part of life in those days; one miner said he could “shoot anything with three words”. The first firearms in Steamboat Springs were pistols made by Wm. Fenton & Sons of Sangamon County, Illinois. These guns were not very successful and only produced about 50 per year between 1892 and 1898. But soon enough new manufacturers came into town: Herrett Firearms Manufacturing Company of Philadelphia was started by John Hutton in 1897 and produced rifles, shotguns, pistols and revolvers until 1907. Hutton was also the owner of a sawmill that produced lumber for buildings in Steamboat Springs. By 1906, all but two of the businesses in town had closed down due to prohibition – gunsmiths being one exception (they continued to make weapons). However, because so many people still used firearms for hunting or target shooting events held every summer on local reservoirs/courses etc., there was always some sort of firearm-related business going on somewhere even during prohibition times! One such business was Gaylord’s Gun Store which operated from 1912-1922 when it became a subsidiary of Winchester Repeating Arms Company (WRA) . It is interesting to note that Gaylord’s Gun Store actually manufactured ammunition – including both rifle rounds and shotgun shells! But even during prohibition years there must have been at least one store left open downtown because around 1919 anothergunshop opened up called Brownells Hardware & Ammunition which specialized exclusively in firearms sales! This store would later become known as Brownells Arsenal! It should be noted that even though only handguns were sold at Brownells Arsenal during Prohibition time (except for shotguns), this store did take part in numerous nationwide gun shows throughout the 1920s/30s including ones at Earls Court Exhibition Hall in London (where Aston Martin cars were displayed)!!! With all these businesses active locally AND nationally withinSteamboatSprings vicinity during Prohibition era - it's easy to see why so many handguns ended up getting created!
