In 1812, after Mexican General José Joaquín de Arguelles discovered gold near Wellsville and laid claim to much of what is now Colorado, settlers from Potosi (now Trinidad) began arrive here as well. By 1825 most of what are today Pueblo County were claimed by Mexico; however, about 20 families continued to live here until 1840 when it was ceded back to Spain as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1861 Congress passed an act authorizing Governor John Evans to purchase all or any portion of California from Mexico for $5 million (equivalent to $100 million in present day dollars). James Wickersham used this opportunity to purchase over 2 square miles (5 km²) west of downtown Denver including all that is now Pueblo County for $2 million less than its current market value due largely to railroad development within walking distance of both downtown Denver and Auraria Springs outside Of Steamboat Springs at that time(the area around Steamboat Springs has since become Auraria Ranch)). This Act became law on November 25th 1861 and designated: "Pueblo County" which included all that exists eastward from Aspen Avenue south line thereof including future Aurora Township located eastwardapproximately two thirds within present day Auraria Township limits along north line thereof extending eastward one third beyond said limits theretofore unclaimed lands lying within present boundaries excepting a certain tract known as the Red Mesa Lands which were patented by José María Castro y Galdón under title incident thereto on October 3rd 1875) whereupon such patent became effective immediately upon conveyance subject only theretofore unclaimed lands lying between Aspen Avenue south line thereof existing prior thereto and said limits extendible thenceforward so long as no other claim may be made therefor situated therein according to actual lines set forth thereon by surveyor general Arent Jorgenson who prepared same during 1870s.- Map not available online Asrapen Ave./Denver Ave.: 15° 38' N 105° 04' W
