By 1840 there were over 400 residents in town; by 1860 there were 1,500 and by 1870 2,000 people living there. A school was founded in 1872 and annexation into Denver followed soon thereafter. 2

The name "Pueblo" means "city of God." The first Europeans to see and visit what is now Pueblo were Hernando de Soto and his party on their way from Mexico City to Tierra del Fuego in 1541. They named it Rio Grande de la Colima because they found evidence that there was a river running through it named after St. Francis Xavier, the missionary who had helped spread Christianity in Mexico City. In 1610, Alonso de Chavez founded La Junta del Río Balsas near present-day Alamosa. This village became known as La Junta for its association with Francisco Vásquez de Coronado's expedition against the Aztec Empire in 1610-11. In 1776, George Washington led an Anglo-American force across the Arkansas River into New Mexico Territory and encountered Spanish soldiers at Taos while raiding Santa Rita Ranchos east of Albuquerque. When Captain John Robinson saw these soldiers he called out to them but no one answered because all his men were taken captive by the Spanish! Washington returned two days later without having discovered any gold or silver mines so went back ashore and reported this to General James Kiefer on July 5th while he was besieging Fort Craig on San Miguel Island off shore from Tucson Arizona The next day Kiefer ordered Corporal George Armstrong to lead a detachment overland across White Sands National Monument towards Los Alamos whereupon Armstrong discovered three small claims about silver values totaling $5 per troy ounce (200 grains). At this point Lieutenant Colonel James Bowie went ashore with another detachment under Major David Humphreys started purchasing these claims from Armstrong and others until finally discovering an open pit mine which yielded 800 ounces (24 pounds) of Silver worth $2 million when brought on stream December 1st 1857 . In 1859 Isaac Asimov wrote about Pueblo's role in American history: "For more than four hundred years [Pueblo] has been throbbing with life; its busy streets are alive with people going to work; its churches bellow forth their messages of love and peace; its mills churn out cloth and other fabrics; its students go forth into new fields every morning." Asimov continued: "No American town has played such an important part either historically or currently in our social life as Pueblo...It has been both a center of learning—the home of Montresor University during earlier centuries—and alsoa haven for criminals, gamblers, thieves, prostitutes and other dissolute elements who have attracted attention from neighboring townsfolk alike."
