In the early 1900s, Pueblo was a thriving town with a population of over 100,000. The area now known as Pueblo had been inhabited for centuries by the Arapaho and Navajo people. In 1869, United States surveyor J.D. Mitchell discovered gold and silver in what is now Pueblo County. The discovery led to a rush of settlers to the area, and in 1870, Congress passed an act authorizing the construction of canals to transport goods from California to Pueblo. The first canal was completed in 1875 and allowed goods to be transported quickly and easily from San Francisco to Pueblo. By 1881, the canal had become one of the most important transportation arteries in Western Colorado. The success of this project led to increased demand for water resources in Pueblo County, which necessitated new irrigation systems and other infrastructure projects. The late 1800s were a time of great change for American society. With increasing pressure from cities like New York City and Chicago, entrepreneurs began developing new ways to produce goods and services that could not be achieved through traditional means such as manufacturing or agriculture. Pueblo, Colorado was founded in 1859 by the Pecos Company. The company built a sawmill and ironworks on the Potomac River. In 1865, the company moved its operations to Pueblo and established a bank.
