The first guns in Pueblo were made by Spanish settlers in the early 1800s. A trader, Manuel Armijo, brought a cannon from Mexico to Pueblo in 1822. The first shots of powder and shot were fired from this cannon on November 10, 1826. In 1868, Captain John J. Magruder of the United States Army took possession of the site where Fort Arroyo now stands and began construction of Fort Sumner. This fort was completed in 1870 and served as a military post until it was surrendered to Mexican forces on January 14, 1881. On that date, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered the gates of the fort to be opened and all troops inside must surrender or be driven out! In 1860, gold was discovered at La Veta Hill outside of town; soon afterwards large numbers of people started arriving here for mining operations and new settlements were established around La Veta Hill and Eagle Mesa (northwest corner of today's east side streets between Canon City Boulevard and Rio Grande Road). In 1863 John Evans organized a community called Red Hills on land adjacent to La Veta Hill although no buildings were erected until 1865 when he donated six acres (2 km²) for a courthouse/ jail/ school complex with an attached garage/smithy shop/ store built on top—the first structure anywhere within miles of any major gold rush town or settlement in America other than Fort Collins or Cheyenne Wells during that period! A year later Mormon pioneers arrived from Utah via wagon train at Red Hills which they named Aurora because its location above Cherry Creek made it attractive to early Mormon settlers seeking easy access to water supplies for their farmsteads southward along Cherry Creek Valley! Today Aurora is located about 3 miles (5 km) southeast of Interstate 25 eastbound off US Highway 24A just past Colorado State Route 506 between Plymouth Drive and Cedar Rapids Drive following Clear Creek River upstream until reaching I-25 northbound where US Highway 24A turns into Arkansas River Road
