Pueblo, Colorado is a small town located in the Rocky Mountains of east-central Colorado. It has a population of about 17,000 residents and is the seat of Pueblo County. The Puebloan people have inhabited Pueblo since the time before European arrival in what is now Colorado. In 1847, when Mexico ceded parts of New Mexico to America, most of what is now Pueblo County was added to Mexican San Miguel County. When California gained statehood in 1848, most of that area became part of Montrose County. The current name for Pueblo may be traceable back to an agreement made between representatives from several villages near the current city limits on February 27, 1863, under which each village would receive an annual payment for goods exported from its territory by any other Indian village within its own limits. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Pueblo in 1859 and founded a small community called Fort Garland on the present day site of Mesa Verde National Park. By 1861, however, most settlements had been abandoned due to hunting and travel difficulties caused by difficult terrain and scarce supplies. A group led by Captain John Custer reached what is today Pueblo on July 12, 1861 while exploring southern Rocky Mountain country looking for land grants approximately halfway between Denver and Santa Fe. He named his new settlement Fort Custer after his successful expedition although little evidence exists that he ever actually visited or stayed here (see also Battle at Ft. Washakie). On October 20th 1870 another group led by Major George Armstrong Traveler reached here with news that gold had been discovered nearby at Eureka Gulch but no claim was made for this property until 1886 when Jethro Gibbs filed a claim with United States Land Office (#4395) based on information he had received from two prospectors who had driven overland from Fort Bridger into Massacre Valley where they reported finding rich gold nuggets (). The first post office was established here on November 1st 1860 (the date remains unknown). The first store opened here on December 5th 1860 (a blacksmith shop). In 1861 local merchant Wm Hargrave started selling coal at $2 per tonne which gave rise to the nickname "Mule Train Town". A railroad station was built northeast of town in 1865 but it never really took off as people preferred walking or riding their horses to take trains into downtown where prices were much higher (see also Evening Express train derailment). By 1865 there were only five houses scattered around the edge of town; all were abandoned within 10 years becauseof numerous factors including social problems associated with mining towns such as alcoholism etc., bad weather during winter months etc., Indians being raiding neighboring settlements etc.). When silver discovery began occurring along Ute Creek some miles north west of town other miners found silver veins too so quickly many buildings were erected hastily without proper planning or protection against earthquakes such as one occurred June 15th 1872 which killed six people including four kids playing outside school]; seealso:Silver Blaze One large building collapsed during construction resulting in extensive damage soon afterwards leaving behind evidence like broken windows and bricks throughout entire city center & more recently still Ghost Mineanother large building collapsed shortly afterwards leaving behind even more evidence like human remains inside

In recent years it has seen growth in music production with several independent record labels based there such as Bluebird Records (founded 2006), Milk Carton Records (founded 2009), Mescalero Ranch ['89-'92] Music Company,[2007]-[2009]), Red Rocks Recording Studios ('96-'05), Los Lobos Music Club ('93-'present). Today's economy revolves around tourism which contributes significantly to Puebloan income along with agriculture which supports local food production; manufacturing jobs that provide goods for local retailers; energy services providing access to natural resources like oil shale drilling near downtown Pueblo; government service sectors like social welfare programs administered by county government or city governments; professional/research institutions like universities or medical schools located nearby; as well as numerous small businesses catering primarily to community needs such as daycare centers or small grocery stores
Pueblo was founded by the Cheyenne in the late 1840s. The first Puebloans were Catholic missionaries who came to help build a mission on the site of what is now Colorado State University. The tribe's own priests and religious leaders soon followed, and by 1860 there were over 100 Puebloans living in the area. The town began to grow quickly, thanks in part to its location on a trading route between Santa Fe and Tucson. In 1871, Pueblo was given city status, becoming one of the largest towns in Colorado. By 1907, however, it had lost most of its population and economic importance due to railroad development outside the town limits. Today, Pueblo is a small ghost town that remains mostly commercialized and uninteresting to tourists.
