Pueblo was founded in the early 1800s by the Pueblo Revolt of 1810. In 1795, Spanish settlers arrived in what is now Pueblo and began to survey land for a new colony. The first governor of New Mexico, Gaspar de San Miguel, granted them 1,500 acres (400 hectares) of land at the confluence of the Colorado and Rio Grande Rivers. When San Miguel died in 1796, his heirs divided his property among themselves. The Partido Republicano Indígena (Repatriated Indian Party), which claimed descent from the ancient Aztec people, received most of it. The Santa Fe Trail followed the river through what is now Pueblo until 1854 when it was abandoned due to financial problems. earlier that year, Mexican president Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered troops to march on Pueblo and burn any buildings they found. Most of the population fled into hiding or were killed; only a few hundred people managed to escape before Mexican forces burned everything down. In 1849, Ulysses S Grant diverted military supplies away from Mexico so that General José Joaquín Carrillo could march on Phoenix and capture its capital City without firing a shot; this event is widely considered as one of the greatest military successes in American history. In 1870–71 during Reconstruction after America's victory over Mexico in war #1 (1846), Colorado became part of Oklahoma Territory under United States rule as part of Manifest Destiny policy which aimed to fill up Native American reservations with white Americans so that they would become agricultural labourers under US control like other Western provinces such as Oregon etc.–the original intent being eventuallyto remove all Native Americans from North America altogether via specific policies euphemistically called "termination" or "extermination." Indigenous nations were not consulted about this decision & many went against it even going as far as joining forces with Mexico against US rule while some chose to stay neutral or negotiated peace treaties with both sides afterwards—-all within legal boundaries set by US policymakers at various points during their reigns culminating in 1890′s aka "The Great American Famine".
