Pueblo, Colorado is a town in Pueblo County, Colorado, United States. The population was 994 at the 2010 census. The name means "place of the pueblo people." The first Europeans to visit Pueblo were the Spanish in 1519 and 1524. The area that became Pueblo was first settled by Native Americans who called it Quijotea. In 1805, General Santa Fe sold land to the Pecos Indians in what is now Mesa Verde National Park. This sale opened up present-day Pueblo County to settlement. A group of Methodist missionaries traveled through Indian Territory and found a group of Kiowa Indians camped on the San Miguel River near Fort Lyon on December 3, 1810. John Custer's battle with the Sioux at Resaca del Apache took place two weeks later on December 14 within sight of Pueblo Creek about 12 miles east of modern day Mesa Verde National Park. As a result, when Gouverneur Morris discovered this site he ordered his scout Francisco Costilla to investigate potential sites for a new capital city for California under Mexican jurisdiction and Costilla recommended that Mexico City be chosen as the new capital because its location would ensure military security for Californians traveling between Mexico and California during their visits to these regions. After some debate among members of Congress over where California should be located (the eastern border of New Mexico being proposed as an alternative), President James K. Polk appointed Judge David Burnett Colfax to oversee hearings on whether or not Californians should move westward into what is now Arizona Territory in order to increase their chances of winning statehood after becoming a U.S.: On July 16, 1912 Colfax submitted his report recommending that Californians move westward into Arizona Territory so they could have access to federal lands including those around Phoenix which had been available only to Mexicans since before Mexican independence from Spain in 1821! Upon hearing this news many people who lived north and east of Phoenix immediately started moving there too! At first most moved closer than Tucson but as more and more people relocated there beganCB&I Railroad lured many more from southcentral Arizona towards Tucson by building tracks along Interstate 10 from 1912 until well into the 1960s
