Pueblo, Colorado is a small town in the central Rocky Mountains of Colorado. It was founded in 1868 by American Indians and became a U.S. Territory in 1912. The population of Pueblo was 9,951 at the 2010 census, up from 8,898 at the 2000 census. The first Indian settlers in what is now Pueblo were the Lenape people who arrived in search of food and trade routes to the Northwest Territories (present-day Canada). They built their first houses on an isolated piece of ground called “The Hill” around 1795. In 1868, however, traders and travelers discovered this place and brought over 1,500 Kiowa and Comanche Indians to live here as squatters under reservation conditions until 1875 when they were moved back east under United States jurisdiction. In 1913 Congress voted to create Pueblo County out of portions of Larimer County on the east side of Park City Lake which straddles present- day Colorado Springs & San Miguel counties. The area included most of present-day Pueblo including its eastern edge on Parker Creek where businesses began situated along State Route 26 just outside today’s city limits while much of western Pueblo lay within boundaries established by Resolution 692 passed by Territorial Governor James Wickersham on November 14th 1861 which created Arapaho National Monument westward from Canon City across Clear Creek Valley to Gunnison River northward to Asotin Pass then southward past Jicarilla Mountain East Fork before terminating near Mrsreech Reservoir northeast corner Notch Peak Wilderness Preserve townsite Gadsden Valley Airport southeast corner New Mexico border Today there are only two small settlements located within boundaries established by Resolution 692: Horseshoe Bend which lies between Canon City & Gunnison Falls National Monument formerly part of Arapaho National Monument & Trimbletown – both located just outside Ofelia Municipal Limits approximately 12 miles southwest Regional District center Ofelia
